Provins, the former capital of the Counts of Champagne was France’s third most important town for the long period from 1019 to 1284. Provins is a unique witness to the 12th and 13th century Champagne Fairs which were the beginning of the economic and cultural exchanges in Europe. It minted its own money : the Provins coinage which was recognised throughout medieval Europe.
